License fees:

  • $10 for spayed/neutered animals
  • $15 for male/female animals

All dogs and cats six months of age or older must be licensed. 

When do I need to register my pet?
The registration period shall begin 30 days from / or on the date the dog or cat is first owned and kept within the city and shall end one year later.

How long is my registration good for?
 The registration year shall be on an annual basis, from the date you receive the license for one year.

What do I need to register my pet?
Bring in a copy of an un-expired rabies vaccination at the time of licensing. Residents are responsible for ensuring that vaccinations do not expire during the license year.

How many animals can I have?
No person or household shall own or harbor more than two dogs of six months of age or older or more than one litter of pups, or more than two cats of more than six months of age or more than one litter of kittens, or engage in the commercial business of breeding, buying selling, trading, training, or boarding cats or dogs or both cats and dogs, without having obtained a special permit from the governing body. 

What if I own more than two dogs or two cats?
There are special permit requirements for pet owners who have more than two dogs or more than two cats.

The fee for such special permit, or any renewal thereof, shall be $100. Those persons who have received governing body approval to keep more than two dogs or more than two cats prior to the effective date of this ordinance shall be exempt from the requirement to pay such special permit fee, or any renewal thereof; provided, however, that this exemption shall no longer apply if a special permit is suspended or revoked as hereinafter provided.

Are there penalties for not registering your animal?
Every owner or harborer of a dog or cat who shall fail to register the same within 30 days of the expiration of the registration period shall pay in addition to the registration fee herein provided, a penalty fee for late registration in the following amounts: for registration more than 30 days but less than 60 days, following the expiration of the registration period - $5; for registration more than 60 days but less than 90 days following the expiration of the registration period - $10; for registration more than 90 days following the expiration of the registration period - $20.

Are there any types of dogs  that are not allowed in the City?
It shall be unlawful for the owner, lessee, occupant or person in charge of any premises in the city to keep, harbor, own or in any way possess within the corporate limits of the city any pit bull dog.

For purposes of this section, a pit bull dog is defined as: Staffordshire bull terrier breed of dog; The American pit bull terrier breed of dog;  The American Staffordshire terrier breed of dog;

Any dog which has the appearance and characteristics of being predominantly of the breeds of Staffordshire bull terrier, American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier; or a combination of any of these breeds.

What do I do if there is a barking dog in my neighborhood?
Contact animal control.  The keeping, or harboring of any animal which by loud frequent and habitual barking, howling, yelping, mewing, roaring or screeching disturbs the peace of any neighborhood is prohibited. It is the duty of any person harboring or keeping such loud or noisy animal or animals to abate the condition, and if he or she fails to do so, the city may abate it by taking up, impounding and/or disposing of the animal at the expense of the owner. (Ord. 408, Sec. 11; Code 1986)

Other things to keep in mind: 

DON’T permit your dog, cat or other animal to defecate on any other persons property within the city, unless you immediately removes such waste from the property.

DON’T permit your dog or cat to run-at-large within the city at any time.  If you animal is running-at-large, it will be impounded.

What to do if you lost your  Pet?

If your pet is lost or missing please contact the Animal Control Officers at 782-0720 as soon as possible. Always have a collar on your pet with the city license on it or put your name and address on the collar. Help us increase the opportunity to protect and return your pet to you.

Impound Information
Stray animals, animals running-at-large, bite case animals and other impounds will be held for a minimum of ten (10) days.

If your pet has been impounded, you can find out by calling Animal Haven or the Animal Control Officer. Your pet must be vaccinated for Rabies and licensed in the city annually.
