About Roeland Park

Officially Recognized As A City In 1951 ...

The City of Roeland Park was originally named after John Roe, an immigrant from Ireland who settled on 267 acres in 1883, part of which Roeland Park now stands.  The Roe Home was built in 1891 and razed in 1958 to make room for the cloverleaf at Roe Boulevard and Johnson Drive.

The boundaries of Roeland Park are 47th Street or County Line Road on the North, 53rd Street or Johnson Drive on the South; Mission Road on the East and Nall Avenue on the West.

Roeland Park's original pool was built in 1958 on land donated by the Roe Estate.   The new pool facility is located on the east side of the Community Center at 4843 Rosewood Drive.  The Community Center address is 4850 Rosewood Drive and offers many different programs throughout the year.  The dome covering the pool will be in place until mid May allowing residents indoor use of the main pool throughout the fall, winter, and spring.

A City Park is located (Nall Park) at 4910 Nall in the northwest corner of the City.   There is a nature trail with playground equipment and a shelter house located there.  Pocket parks are located at Neosho and Wells, Cedar and Sycamore (Carpenter Park), Granada and 51st Street, and Roeland Drive and Johnson Drive.  There are five churches within the City Limits; Southridge Presbyterian, St. Agnes Catholic, Roeland Park United Methodist, Kansas Korean Church and Mission Full Gospel.  Roeland Park Branch of the Johnson County Library is located at 5210 Cedar.

The Shawnee Indian Mission Museum located at 53rd and Mission Road was established in 1839 by a Methodists Minister, Thomas Johnson, for whom Johnson County was named.   The Shawnee Indian Mission was used for Indian Children, mostly of the Shawnee Tribe, as a manual training school as well as farming on the 2,000 acre farm with a large dairy.  Two of the buildings are now museums and are open for inspection.  The other building is a residence for the custodian.
