The following information develops a background for each individual participating in the Citizens’ Academy and will be used to gather information about each Academy member. All participants will be accepted into the program unless the number of applicants exceeds desired enrollment of no more than 12 individuals. Class size is limited due to the desire for the Academy to remain informal and adequately allow for questions, responses, and tours for the sessions. In the event the number of applicants for the Citizens’ Academy is larger than 12 participants, applicants will be selected on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The preliminary session are:
Session 1 Governing the City: Tour 2nd floor City Hall: The relationship between the City Council and City Administration, the role of Advisory Boards and Committees, and Finance Department
Session 2 Quality of Life: Community Center and Community Pool Tour. Learn more about why Roeland Park is a great place to live, work and raise a family.
Session 3 Arts in our Park, History of our city and intergovernmental relations. Tour of art projects throughout the city and discussion with county and state officials.
Session 4 Infrastructure and Codes Issues: Tour of Public Works and discussion of codes issues.
Session 5 Public Safety: Tour & overview of the Police Department.
Session 6 Fire Safety: Tour and briefing by the Consolidated Fire District #2.
