On Saturday, July 21, artist Jorge Blanco arrived from Sarasota, FL, to meet the Roeland Park community and get to work on the R Park Sculpture Project, slated for installation in May, 2019. At 9:30 in the morning Jorge met in R Park with the Arts and Parks Committees, Public Works and Citizens Sculpture Initiative to advise on the location, orientation and height of the sculpture. The discussion continued at a working lunch with Jorge and his wife, Elena.

At 4:00 p.m. that same day a standing-room-only crowd of Roeland Parkers gathered at the Community Center for homemade pie, ice cream, a chance to meet Jorge Blanco and enjoy his informative slideshow/talk, followed by a Q & A. Blanco’s witty, energetic, and positive personality is expressed in his more than 30 bold and colorful sculptural works in cities around the world.

This R Park sculpture project is privately funded and will be a gift to the City, facilitated by Citizens Sculpture Initiative for R Park. Now is your opportunity to help raise the needed final dollars by sending your donation to City Hall today. Donations of any size are greatly valued and appreciated. Tax-deductible checks should be written to “Roeland Park Community Foundation,” Memo on Check: “R Park Sculpture.”

The R Park sculpture needs a name! And YOU can help! Contest rules and entry forms are available here. Enter as many different names as you’d like until Dec. 31, 2018.
