How else is Roeland Park committed to helping the environment/battling climate change?

The City of Roeland Park approved Resolution 676 adopting a carbon emission reduction goal of a 28% reduction by 2025. In addition to the purchase of Dynamhex which will help the City and its residents track emissions, the City has already taken several steps to become cleaner, greener and more energy efficient:

Energy:

  • The City is installing solar panels on the roofs of city hall and the community center, as well as in the parking lot of city hall on top of parking structures. This project will be complete in 2021 and is estimated to reduce Roeland Park’s carbon emissions by 10,000 tons over the life of the panels. Click here for more details on that project
  • Ordinance no. 995 requires all new buildings in Roeland Park to have roofs that are “solar ready”, meaning they are able to withstand the load associated with solar equipment in the event a future owner wishes to install solar panels.

Transportation

  • The City is moving toward electric fleet vehicles, starting with the Neighborhood Services Department. The Code Enforcement Officer and Building Official vehicles will be electric vehicles starting in 2021 (see 2021 Budget Objectives).

Buildings

  • In 2020, the City upgraded the building automation system (BAS) which remotely controls HVAC usage in city hall. BAS was also added to the Community Center.
