The City of Roeland Park, Kansas, is issuing a call for artist proposals for a mural to be painted at West 47th Street and Roe Lane. This mural wall will be part of a collection of 7 themed murals that convey aspects of the history and culture of Roeland Park. The overarching theme is “Uniquely Rooted” which is the city’s motto.
There will be a centered mural of a tree with roots that reach out and become frames around each of the other six panels. The separate mural themes are:
--Pre-history (before the city was formed)
--History (who and how the city was developed)
--Community and Business
--Families and Pets
The proposal will come in 3 rounds. Any mural artist should provide their resume along with images from 3 completed murals. Ten artists will be selected to develop mural proposals from this group. Each artist may choose one mural category and every artist will develop an idea for the middle tree and root framework. These artists will receive $100.00 for submission of their mural concepts along with a narrative explanation of their concept. From this group, 7 artists will be chosen for the final mural project. Final mural category choices may be modified by the RP Arts Advisory Committee due to the need to cover all categories.
Submissions shall be submitted to for consideration.Compensation: Each selected artist will be paid $3500.00 for completing their portion of the mural.
- Opening Submissions: due April 30, 2021
- Application with resume and images from 3 completed murals
- Selection of 10: May 21, 2021
- Selection of 7: June 12, 2021
- Muralists will research the content and develop mural mockups for submission
- Final Proposed Murals: June 28, 2021
- Beginning/End work dates: July-September, 2021
--artists may work in differing months to prevent over-congestion in the area
The Roeland Park Arts Advisory Committee may provide input regarding the content of the murals. Additionally, there will be a supervising artist to monitor the project. The City Council shall issue final approval of the art, pursuant to the City of Roeland Park purchasing policy.
